Growing up I was a short thirty minute trip to the beach. I was so close that when I trained for marathons I actually used to run there and use the beach as a backdrop for my long runs. So many of my childhood memories included trips to the beach and picnics on the sand. When we moved to Charlotte and I realized that the closest beach was 3 1/2 hours away I knew that we would no longer be making day trips to my favorite setting. Luckily, I have family in Hilton Head and am familiar with this location, but with two little kids and a dog it is not easy to spring a last minute trip on relatives. We were so excited when we discovered the family friendly Sonesta at Hilton Head which can accommodate the four of us annnnnd they are dog friendly so Kado can come along too!
The Sonesta at Hilton Head is the perfect destination for a family vacation. The hotel is definitely kid friendly and has activities around the clock for parents and kids alike. They even have a mini summer camp setup called “Just Us Kids” program for children 3 and older. Just Us Kids programs include game time, beach adventures, swimming and arts and crafts. Ages 3-5 years are welcome in one of their half day sessions and children ages 6-12 years may join in on a full day or choose a half-day program. A kids camp on vacation with built in activities? Yes, please.
So what is a parent to do with their free time while their kids are involved in organized activities? During the day there is a fitness center along with a spa at the Sonesta which will allow mom and dad to receive the rest and relaxation they desperately need. At night, there is a bar located on the main level and at night they have live music and a dessert bar available for guests. To our pleasant surprise the band they had when we stayed there was incredible. In our opinion there is nothing better than enjoying a cold beer and listening to a great live band.
If you are looking spend time together as a family all day everyday then you are also in luck. All of the amenities like the pool, check it out here, accommodate all ages and swimming levels. There is also a bar connected to the pool so if you are like me and have to sit on the sidelines with a tiny baby you can sip your sauvignon blanc while you sit poolside. The beach is conveniently connected to the resort so it is just a short walk away. Hilton Head is not known for their waves so the ocean in this location is perfect for families with small children.
The food at the Sonesta was also one of our favorite parts. There are plenty of options for all taste levels and PLENTY of options for picky eaters. The chef apparently has a superb culinary background and his skills show through with the various delicious selections available at each meal. Indoor dining and outdoor dining is also available. We loved enjoying breakfast and coffee on the patio first thing in the morning and then enjoying a cocktail and appetizers al fresco before dinner.
The best part about the Sonesta at Hilton Head is you don’t need to leave the resort. Its like a tiny village with plenty of activities and options built in. However, if you would like to venture out there are so many beautiful golf courses, restaurants and tourist activities all within close proximity to the resort. You can even rent a bike from the resort to explore the island. If you have a chance I would highly recommend heading to the Bluffton Art District. Make sure you stop into Al-Harry Furniture Design store. My grandfather (who will be turning 90 this July!) and my Aunt Alison design and build beautiful furniture together and sell it in their store.
So if you are looking for an option for your next family vacation I highly recommend the Sonesta at Hilton Head.
