I have had numerous questions about how I create my “refined beach waves” as I like to call them. Never one for the “just rolled out of bed I don’t care to brush my hair” look I set out to create a more coiffed version of the beachy waves. I’m obsessed with all of DryBar’s products and use everything from their curling iron down to their Southern Belle (how appropriate) volumizing mouse. I love this little package of all of my favorite products that Sephora offers – you get all of the DryBar essentials in one! Their line not only works well but it also smells oh soooo good! So as you toss your perfectly coiffed head of curls around people will also enjoy a light and refreshing scent.
Step by Step Guide (with Pictures) on How-To Create Refined Beach Waves
1. Start with hair that hasn’t been just washed BUT if you are like me and wash your hair everyday (I know its a sin but I workout way too much not to shower every single day) dry your hair by applying volumizing mouse to roots. Dry your hair so it is super dry and flip your head upside down as you dry to get better volume.
2. If you hair hasn’t been just washed apply dry shampoo. I also add this if my hair has just been washed because it helps the curl hold better. The more product here the better 🙂 Lightly brush your hair out post blow-out.
3. Use clips, or a simple rubber band will do, to section off your hair. Let the curling begin!
4. I try create 5 sections. The curl will hold better if you wrap less hair around the barrel of the curling iron. You think it will save you more time to do more hair at once but you will just end up smoothing over sections AGAIN at the end.
5. Clip up 3/4 of your hair and start with the bottom section. Give it a good spray with hair spray (using an aerosol can hairspray – I know sin #2). And start curling 2 inch sections of hair by curling away from your face holding the curling iron in a vertical line.
5. After you have done this section let down the next section of hair (about half of your hair should be down now) and begin curling. The back is just as important as the front. Use a mirror to check your work in the back.
6. Next split the top section of hair into two sections (think around the crown of your head) and start on the same side as your part. Again curl away from the face to avoid the shirley temple look. Vary the height from which you start to prevent it from looking too perfect.
7. Once you finish this side head to the next side of your face and again vary the heights from which you start with the curling iron. Leaving the pieces right around your face for the last of the curling.
8. As you head into the final curl – curl the pieces around your face up and away so the hair isn’t hanging in your face when you talk to people. Again, the theme is “refined” here.
9. Flip your head over and spray with hairspray, then flip your head back over and smooth out any last curls on top that need to be touched up again with the curling iron.
10. Cup your hand and grab a section of curls (like you are going to fluff them) and spray with hairspray with the other hand. This will give you a little extra volume and that last shot to hold the curls in place.
Finally – curl any pieces that needed to be refined -aka put in their place. Add a TINY bit of texturizing spray to some of the ends of your curls and you are done! Viola!
