Casual Holiday Party

Growing up I remember putting on uncomfortable stiff party dresses for the holidays.  While I loved looking at the big bell skirts created by layers of tulle I hated wearing them.  My love of athleisure has probably come from years of wearing scratchy fabrics that while they looked pretty were never comfortable.  My mom always had the best intentions for us and we always looked so chic but comfortable was not part of the equation.  While I shop for our own families holiday party outfits memories of itchy skin come flooding back.  However, as I browsed the racks at Nordstrom I realized you can do comfy and chic.  Yes its a win-win for the entire family at Nordstrom friends!

Casual Family Holiday Party Outfits

With a packed holiday calendar and lots of traveling to do in between I wanted to make sure we had cute party outfits ready to go.  We will be heading up to NY this year to spend Christmas with our families. Which means we’re leaving the warmer southern weather behind.  So I made it my mission to find holiday party outfits that will allow us to stay warm. That way we can stay comfortable in the cold winter weather and still allow us to look chic.

Holiday Outfit For Mom

As the leader of the Brennan pack – when it comes to getting everyone ready anyway – comfort is of utmost importance to me.  Most likely, I will be wrangling two little kids and trying to get myself ready at the same time.  I have found it easiest to have a simple outfit formula – a go-to recipe if you may – that you know looks good on you and also allows you to be comfortable.   Here is my chic mom outfit formula that is flattering on most people…

Chic And Warm Outfit For Mom

Tunic Sweater + Spanx Leggings/Skinny Jeans + Bold Accessory – In This Case The Wrap + Over The Knee Boots

As mentioned above I gravitate towards warm soft fabrics which is why I love using this tunic sweater, and this one as the base of my outfit.  From there I go with Spanx Leggings – one because they have so many options and two because they make you look slimmer.  If you prefer skinny jeans to leggings then try the brand Paige Denim.  They offer styles with a high rise waist – why wasn’t this always the trend – and have a little stretch.

Flat over the knee boots or ones with a small heel are my “dressed-up” footwear of choice in the winter.  I have been wearing the Lowland Over The Knee Boot forever  and the ones I am wearing in this picture are just as great and only a fraction of the price.  By pairing over the knee boots with leggings in the same color you are creating one long lean line.

Most importantly add on some accessories.  No need to overload in this department but imagine how boring my outfit would look if you took away the patterned scarf.  So find one bold piece, whether it be a statement earring or a bold lip or both to take your outfit up a notch.  This fleece lined beanie will keep you warm and still allow you to look chic.  As far as jewelry goes I love this pre-made stack of stretchy gold bracelets – no thinking required.  When it comes to earrings these days I defer to Baublebar.  They have so many affordable statement pieces that will instantly take your outfit up a notch like these gold disc earrings that I wear all the time.

Casual Holiday Party Make-Up For Moms

When it comes to makeup again keep it simple.  I don’t know how moms find the time to put on layers of makeup and create a contoured eye that looks like something out of a Pinterest post.  For me, I use five products every single day that allow me to look fresh and pretty and not overdone – all of which can be applied in your rearview mirror.  When we do have a holiday party I tend to up the ante with two simple products that are beyond easy to use.

Start with a CC Cream as your base.  I use Supergoop in light/medium which provides light coverage, has SPF in it and still looks natural.

Next, I apply a light dusting of the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick onto the apples of my cheeks over the CC Cream.

A great mascara is an essential. I love Bobbi Brown’s Eye Opening Mascara – they had me at the name.

Well defined brows will make you look more polished.  A step that always intimated me until I found this easy to apply brow gel.  Just a few simple swipes and you are good to go.

Most important in my book are the lips!  I prefer gloss at parties because it just looks and feels more fun.  For a bold lip I love Poppy Lip Glace by Laura Mercier that moisturizes, smells like vanilla and you determine how saturated your lip looks based on application.  For a more neutral lip I love this High Shimmer Lip Gloss in Bellini which turns out is a best seller at Nordstrom – so I’m not the only one who likes it!

Finally, to up the ante for holiday parties try either of these super shimmery sticks that are so simple to apply to your lids but make the world of difference.  This cream shadow stick has a little bit of shimmer in it and looks great for daytime or nighttime.  This Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow is my new favorite secret weapon for a fun night out!

Kids Holiday Outfits

On Isabella: Leopard Coat // Dress // UGGs //// On Summer: Hat // Sweater // Leggings // UGGs

When it comes to the girls outfits I look for comfort and warmth.  Let’s start with Isabella’s outfit.  She is wearing this adorable dress that comes with a soft tulle skirt that is built in!  The top part of the dress is a cozy fleece. It’s almost like sweatshirt fabric and has little silver stars stamped on it for some added glitz.  For them, and let’s be honest myself, I prefer leggings over tights.  Can you even with this faux leopard hooded jacket?  It also has a cozy fleece lining and zips closed for added warmth.  With the hood she can easily pull it on or off if she gets too hot.  If they had it in my size I would 100% buy it.

Summer’s outfit is one of my favorites.

This little panda sweater is a soft, super fuzzy sweater knit from eyelash yarns that will be a go-to favorite style on chilly winter days.  The hat she is wearing is actually Isabella’s but she insisted on wearing it. I love it because the ear flaps keep their tiny ears warm and this is one hat they both love wearing!

When it comes to footwear I did all of the leg work and spent over an hour in Nordstrom trying on all of their footwear that should work with winter outfits.  The three of us couldn’t find anything we liked, with the exception of UGGs.  When it comes to winter fashion for kids you have to go with what works best and UGGs work from both a comfort and cozy standpoint.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and if you have a casual holiday party to attend then you follow our lead and go with chic and cozy!
