So you are headed to NYC and don’t want to stand out as the typical tourist?! It’s actually pretty easy to avoid looking like a tourist in NYC. If you are headed to Times Square embrace your inner 90s secretary and rock those white ankle socks and sneakers. But what if you are headed to ones of those cool trendy spots downtown. The one that you have been stalking on instagram – hello Cha Cha Matcha and Pietro Nolita – and don’t want to stand out from the uber chic crowd. After spending time in NYC this summer I discovered an outfit formula that will keep you comfortable while looking chic.
Begin by building your outfit around comfortable footwear. Sure if you can take a cab everywhere or Uber around town then by all means rock those high heels. But if you will be doing lots of walking opt for a cool pair of sneakers. Choose a classic style like the Stan Smith or a retro style like the Nike Cortez. Both under $100 and both will get you from point A to B in style. Opt for the no-see ankle socks – as you can see I left mine at home – to create the illusion of longer legs. Once you have found a comfortable yet cool pair of sneakers then your outfit options are endless.
Opt For A Mix of Feminine & Masculine Pieces
I love the idea of mixing masculine pieces – the sneakers – with more feminine pieces – like a dress or skirt. Pair the unexpected by rocking a pleated skirt – the “it” style of the fall season – with sneakers. Pleated skirts add interest to outfits so you can keep the rest of your look relatively simple. A classic tee shirt compliments the edginess of your pumped up kicks so stick with simplicity on top. This J.Crew tee has a drapey feel to it making me want to order it in every single color. It pairs well with everything and looks great on!
Bring On The Accessories:
Now that you have your outfit base you need accessories. Outfits are created with the help of fun add-ons. When I saw the backpack make a comeback I ran from this trend as the only vision I had in my head was Cher from Clueless. However, the brand Calia sent me one and I just loved its simple classic black style and multiple pockets for organizing. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. Backpacks if worn correctly – stick to a monochromatic smaller style – allow you to be hands free and also give you that cool factor. Plus, the only person that has ever made the fanny pack look cool is Carrie Bradshaw and even still we questioned it right?
Eyewear Is Essential:
Finally the finishing touch, sunglasses. Aviator style Ray-Bans are will always be my go-to style because they are a classic and are super versatile. Quay Australia also has a ton of inexpensive options like these matte black beauties which also seem to go with almost everything. As a tourist, Quay might be the way to go as most of their price points are under $75. Of course, no look would be complete in my book without a pretty pout. A bright bold lip or clean nude neutral will tie your whole look together and provide polish. Re-create this simple equation for your next trip to NYC and people might simply stop you and ask you for directions.
